چکیده

Macaca nemestrina have two fetal hemoglobins which differ in the structures of their .y chains. Thus animals of this species, like man, appear to possess duplicate y-chain loci. In this study, the ontogenesis of hemoglobins in M. nemestrina was followed in animals ranging in age from the 60th day of gestation to adulthood. Fetuses in the 60th day of gestation had the two fetal hemoglobins and a small amount of presumed embryonic hemoglobin. Fetuses between 60 and 132 days’ gestation had only the two fetal hemoglobins. Adult hemoglobin appeared in the last month of gestation. The subsequent transition from ‘yto /3-chain formation was nearly completed by the end of the second postnatal month. The two fetal hemoglobins were present in 2:1 proportions throughout fetal development and the period spanning the shift from .Yto /3-chain formation. The pattern of hemoglobin development in these macaques differs from that in man in the following ways: (1) The relative activities of the two y-chain loci do not change. (2) a-Chain synthesis is adequate throughout gestation (no y-chain tetramers were found). (3) The transition from yto /3chain synthesis is more abrupt.

Pharmacokinetics of stavudine (2',3'-didehydro-3'-deoxythymidine) in the neonatal macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

Our objective was to determine whether age effects the pharmacokinetics of stavudine (2',3'-didehydro-3'-deoxythymidine) in the neonatal pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina). The drug (5 mg/kg of body weight) was administered serially as a single intravenous bolus to the same four macaques at the ages of < 1 week, 1 month, and 4 months. Plasma clearance at < 1 week of age was significantly lo...

TRIMCyp expression in Old World primates Macaca nemestrina and Macaca fascicularis.

Primates have evolved a variety of restriction factors that prevent retroviral replication. One such factor, TRIM5alpha, mediates a postentry restriction in many Old World primates. Among New World primates, Aotus trivirgatus exerts a similar early restriction mediated by TRIMCyp, a TRIM5-cyclophilin A (CypA) chimera resulting from a CypA retrotransposition between exons 7 and 8 of the TRIM5 ge...

Social learning in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and adult humans (Homo sapiens) on a two-action artificial fruit.

An artificial fruit (AF) was used to test for social learning in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and adult humans (Homo sapiens). A monkey demonstrator opened the AF, showing alternative methods to 2 groups of cage mates. Video films of the monkey demonstrations were presented to adult humans. Compared with chimpanzees and children, the macaques watched the demonstrations significantly ...

Effect of zidovudine on transplacental pharmacokinetics of ddI in the pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

Since zidovudine and ddI may be used in combination in the future to treat pregnant women who are human immunodeficiency virus positive, we conducted a study to determine whether zidovudine affects the transfer of ddI across the placenta. Zidovudine and ddI were infused simultaneously to three near-term pregnant macaques (Macaca nemestrina) at 156 +/- 1.5 days of gestation. Samples of maternal ...
